My current favourite term: «agentic engineering». «Agentic» because the new default is that you are not writing the code directly 99% of the time, you are orchestrating agents who do and acting as oversight. «Engineering» to emphasise that there is an art & science and expertise to it.

Where do these numbers come from? GitHub Octoverse Reports: This is the primary source for "Public" code data. GitHub reported over 4 billion contributions in 2023. Analysts multiply contribution data by average changes-per-commit to estimate total volume. IDC (International Data Corporation): IDC tracks the "Global Developer Population" and their productivity. They have historically projected a CAGR (Compound Annual Growth Rate) of roughly 20-25% for code production, which has spiked recently due to GenAI. The "AI Multiplier" (Microsoft/Google): In 2024/2025, Google and Microsoft leadership (including Satya Nadella and Thomas Dohmke) highlighted that AI-assisted developers are writing code 55% faster than before. The 2025 jump to 600B+ lines reflects the shift from "human-typed" code to "AI-generated" code. Bitkom and Evans Data Corp: These organizations track the growth of professional developers (roughly 27-30 million globally) and their output metrics. A Note on "Ghost" Code: It is important to distinguish between stored code and generated code. In 2025, a massive portion of produced code is "ephemeral" — code generated by an AI to solve a specific, one-time data task and then discarded. This contributes to the high numbers but doesn't necessarily mean the global "permanent" codebase is growing at the same rate.

Fra boken «Art & Fear» av David Bayles og Ted Orland. En keramikklærer delte klassen i to grupper: Gruppe A (kvantitet) ble vurdert kun på vekten av keramikken de produserte. 50 pund = A, 40 pund = B, osv. Gruppe B (kvalitet) skulle bare lage én vase — den skulle være perfekt for toppkarakter. Resultat? Kvantitetsgruppen laget den klart beste keramikken. Mens kvalitetsgruppen satt og teoretiserte om perfeksjon, lærte kvantitetsgruppen gjennom praksis — de eksperimenterte, feilet, justerte og ble bedre for hver vase. Historien er et sterkt argument for learning by doing, iterativ utvikling, prototyping og MVP-mentalitet. AI-verktøy gir oss muligheten til å iterere raskere enn noensinne. Programming with AI assistance is very revealing. … LLMs are so good now that I can validate and generate a tremendous amount of code while doing hardly any hand-coding at all. And it's dawning on me that I don't miss it. It's an interesting way to find out that I was always a system designer first, with code only as a means rather than an end.
